Alexander Fleming, a Scottish scientist, discovered the first antibiotic, penicillin in 1928. He was keeping staphylococcus bacteria in a petri dish (a glass plate) when a speck of mould fell in it, causing the mould to grow on the jelly used to feed the bacteria. Surprisingly, it started to kill the bacteria. Fleming thought the mould (called penicillum) produced a substance which killed the bacteria and thus called it penicillin.
