What is St. John’s Wort?

St. John’s Wort also known as Hypericum perforatum is the most common herb sold today. This aromatic yellow herb is found throughout Europe and the United States. How it’s compounds actually work is not yet fully understood, but several theories have been suggested.

What does St. John’s Wort do?

Preliminary studies suggest that St. John's Wort might work by preventing nerve cells in the brain from reabsorbing the chemical messenger serotonin, or by reducing levels of a protein involved in the body's immune system functioning. St. John's Wort has been used over the centuries for mental conditions, nerve pain, and a wide variety of other health conditions. Today, St. John's Wort is used for anxiety, mild to moderate depression, and sleep disorders.

Extracts have been recommended traditionally for a wide range of medical conditions. The most common modern-day use of St. John's Wort is the treatment of depression. Numerous studies report St. John's Wort to be more effective than placebo and equally effective as tricyclic antidepressant drugs in the short-term treatment of mild-to-moderate major depression.

It is also used as a nerve tonic for anxiety. In a study on 20 randomized trials (some compared St. John”s Wort to medication, others to a placebo) conducted on outpatients that suffer from mild to moderate depression, it was found that St. John”s Wort performed better than placebo and was as effective as some standard antidepressants. Scientists hypothesize that its mood enhancing effects are due to two compounds, hypericin and hyperforin. They believe these compounds may inhibit the breakdown of several neurotransmitters, including serotonin, which is partially responsible for controlling moods and emotions.

How much St. John’s Wort should be taken?

The standard dosage used around the world for St. John’s wort is the same as that used in most of the trials in the British Medical Journal meta-analysis: three 300-mg doses per day of a preparation that contains St. John’s wort extract, standardized to 0.3% hypericin, normally taken over a period of weeks, months, or often much longer.

Our St. John’s Wort is standardized to contain .3% hypericins.
